A Mother's Love

Last week I told you about the mini film shoot I did. Well here it is, A Mother's Love, which is a pitch for story hive. People pitch ideas, others vote, and if they win, they get $10,000 to produce a 10 minute short. The focus for this round of competition is female directors. Mini film shoot

I did a mini film shoot on the weekend!

It was with a director named Lorraine. She is a writer, and this is her first foray into directing.

It's a short pitch for the story hive contest - the category is female directors.

I met Lorraine and my scene partner Rayann on Friday, we had a rehearsal, then shot for about 4 hours on Saturday.

Nice, quick, and easy!

We only shot 3 pages, about 3 minutes. If her project wins, she gets $10,000 to develop the whole thing. So fingers crossed!

Same Boat - winner!

Guess what? Same Boat WON the People's Choice Award sat the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. I didn't get a chance to go to the screening, but I was happy to attend the cast and crew screening. And we won, how cool!

Same Boat Cast and Crew Screening

I finally saw Same Boat! This is the short film I shot last May, a whole year ago! They have finally completed it, and they had a cast and crew screening on the weekend. It was both weird and exciting to see my face on a big screen. Here are the two directors of the short films we saw, doing an intro chat.

And here is our director David C Jones, who (in his own words) "can't take a serious picture." I hope he's happy with the end result, I was really impressed. It has already been selected to be in a film festival this summer, hopefully more to follow. Such fun!

Show notes

Here's an old notebook that I use for show notes. It was given to me by the cast of the Metro Panto, back in 2012. Since then, I have jotted down notes in it for many other shows, and I'm almost on the last page. It's been fun looking back through scribblings for shows over the past 3 years. The shows I have jotted down notes for in this book are:

Into the Woods
Sweeney Todd - I wasn't in this show, but I reviewed it for the Sondheim Review.

And that's not counting the notes I jotted down for The Black House and the Blue Sky, the movie Same Boat, Side by Side by Sondheim, Silly, Stupid Love Song - and I'm sure there are other projects that I've forgotten. Time sure does fly when you have all this theatre to keep you busy!

Same Boat - almost done

Remember back in May I did some shooting for a short film, Same Boat? Well it's almost done! I went back in to the studio to re-record some bits.

It was so strange watching the almost-completed cut. They have locked picture and now just have to do sound and colour correction. Here's a production still - I had long hair back then! I'm excited to see the final version :)

Some Rent film

Last weekend I did some on camera stuff for the production of Rent that I'm doing.

It was a gorgeous day out on this balcony.

Of course, they had snacks. Healthy fruit and Skittles!

I really love on camera stuff. There was a lot of waiting around, as there usually is in film work, but it's worth it for the half hour or so of camera work.

Same Boat Filming

What a great weekend! We filmed for "Same Boat", which we already did the music for. We were up in Whistler at this beautiful house on Alta Lake: 

Set dec transformed the house into The Overlook, the Bed & Breakfast where our leading lady lives.

It was a great bunch of crew and cast and I just had an awesome time!

The weather held up too. We only had about half an hour of rain all weekend and it didn't interrupt the shoot at all. This first day was hot and sunny, so I got lots of Vitamin D!

Cathy did ALL the work while were in the boat. Seriously, she had to paddle, try to keep the boat in frame AND sing and act.

The last take of the shoot was where 5 boys dive off the dock and into the (chilly) lake. We only had one shot at it and they nailed it.

Such a great weekend, I'm on a film set high. But I slept for a full 8 and a half hours last night - between this and New York, I was exhausted. I'm looking forward to my life calming down a bit :)

Music for Same Boat

This weekend we are filming "Same Boat"! I'm super excited, we're spending two days up in Whistler. We recorded the music tracks for it last night. Here's Peter, who composed all the small bits of music we'll be singing:

There's Will in the background, blowin' on his saxophone. He gets to do a bit of singing at the end of the movie too.

And at the mic here is my dear friend Cathy. She and I play a lesbian couple in the film. How fun!!

"Same Boat"

Last weekend I was on Granville Island, on a boat. Not a real boat, sadly. But very soon, I WILL be on a boat - and in a short film called "Same Boat." It was written by my friend David C. Jones, and it's being produced by a new-ish film company in Vancouver, Ode. It's going to be a short film, only about 12 minutes long, but it should be fun! Me and my friend Cathy are playing musical lesbians!
